COTA (Council on the Ageing) Queensland’s Patron Her Excellency Governor of Queensland Ms Quentin Bryce AC hosted a morning tea for current and former Board members to mark COTA’s 50 years of services to Queensland seniors.

Established as the Old People's Welfare Council of Queensland in 1957, COTA exists to protect and promote the wellbeing of all seniors in Queensland. It is a member of COTA Over 50s a national organisation whose role is to advocate issues, particularly those issues which impact on vulnerable and disadvantaged older Australians, to the Australian Government.

COTA Queensland works to strengthen the voice of seniors in Queensland through providing community education programs, researching, developing and advocating policies at all three levels of government and providing an information and referral service to meet the needs of people aged 50 years and over.

COTA works in partnership with a broad range of other organizations and will be holding other events later this year to mark its contributions over the past fifty years.

Life Membership was conferred on Mrs Vera Raymer OAM who served on the original Executive Committee of the Old People’s Welfare Council of Queensland (now COTA Queensland). Mrs Raymer’s was co-opted back onto the Executive Committee in 1987 and served until 1992 including editing COTA Queensland’s newsletter.

In March Mrs Lyn Kelman AM was appointed COTA Queensland’s new President following the resignation of Ms Annette Reilly who has moved to Mt Isa. Mrs Kelman has chaired COTA Queensland’s Policy Council for the past three years and represents COTA Queensland on the COTA Over 50s National Policy Council and Board.
